Type 5 Plastics

Type 5 plastic, also known as Polypropylene (PP), used in packaging materials and household products. It is a lightweight and durable material that can withstand high temperatures, making it a popular choice for food and beverage containers.

Polypropylene is used in a variety of products including yogurt containers, margarine tubs, ketchup bottles, medicine bottles, and disposable razors. It is also used in the manufacturing of automotive parts, toys, and furniture.

PP is a widely recycled plastic and is accepted by tons of curbside recycling programs. It is often recycled into items such as battery cases, brooms, and ice scrapers. When recycling PP, make sure to rinse out the container and remove any caps or labels before placing it in the recycling bin. Check with your local recycling program for specific guidelines on recycling PP in your area. In addition to curbside recycling programs, many grocery stores and retail locations offer plastic bag and film recycling programs, which often accept PP packaging materials.

Like other plastics, PP takes a long time to break down, with an estimate ranging from 20 to 30 years in a landfill, possibly even more! When it is not disposed of properly like everything else it goes into our ecosystem and can harm wildlife and the environment. In addition to the environmental impact, there are also concerns about the potential health risks associated with PP. Some studies have found that chemicals in PP can leach into food and drinks stored in its containers, which can be harmful to us.

There are several ways to reduce the consumption of PP and limit its impact on the environment. One way is to choose products made from alternative materials such as glass, stainless steel, or aluminum whenever possible. Another way to reduce PP consumption is to opt for reusable containers, such as reusable water bottles, lunch containers, and shopping bags. This helps save money in the long run by reducing the need to purchase disposable products. A win win!
